Flying an Arri SR3 on the hybrid model 2/3/3A Steadicam

Steadicam optimises a shooting schedule by reducing shot setup time and visibility of the crew. For this video, the steadicam enabled the camera to be woven in and out of the crowds on the street in New York City, largely unnoticed. This gives filmmakers the amazing freedom to film large crowd scenes realistically and inexpensively.

The mobility of the steadicam made these scenes possible considering the budget. Also, the speed and versatility of the steadicam allowed the company to grab the shots quickly, before attracting a crowd. It never feels safe to be brandishing weapons, even stunt movie weapons, on a busy street in South Central. The steadicam made it possible for the director to shoot these scenes on a scary street without incident.

Almost Salinas
Desert Steadicam and the virtues of LCD
Filming feature film ALMOST SALINAS
Panavision Lightweight II on a customized sled.

On location in Paso Robles, CA in July, 2000. This movie was the testing ground for a new lightweight expendable LCD monitor in the bright desert. The use of LCD reduced the weight of the monitor system and freed up payload weight for an extra A/B brick battery for 24 volt cameras. The monitors are expendable, costing 1/10 of the cheapest green screen. The image is in COLOR and the monitor lasts 11 hours on a single charge.
