Commercial Shot in South Dakota September 1998

The front part of the herd of Buffalo stampeding across the plains near Rapid City South Dakota.  This is the herd photographed using the steadicam mounted on the 6-wheel Polaris as shown below.  The total buffalo used for this shot was about 500 head.

The steadicam arm was mounted to the vehicle racing next to the herd at a speed of 30-40 mph.  The articulated arm absorbed all the shocks caused by the rough terrain and maneuvers among the stampeding herd.  Rigged for low mode, the camera sailed rock steady six inches above the ground as it burst through stands of grass.  Operated from the vehicle, the steadicam offered a full 180 degree range of perspective, even at full speed.

Much of the shooting was in controlled situations such as this.  Here, several large bulls were released from a trailer and funneled through a channel of space in front of the cameras.  Often the only thing between the racing bulls and the open plain was a line of people.  Buffalo are so easily frightened that when confronted by humans on foot they choose to run away, despite their formidable size and strength.
